CURADORIAL

“My skin is language
And the reading is all yours, oh

Despite of so many denials, so much pain invading us
We are the city’s joy
Despite so many denials, so many delinquency
We are the city’s joy

The city’s joy – Virgínia Rodrigues and Lazzo Matumbi

Indomitable Presences presents the materialization of countercolonial imageries in several mediums. Assembled by the digital quilombo AfrontArt, the exhibit restates the commitment to promote and develop black and indigenous perspectives in contemporaneous Brazilian visual arts scene.

The shared curatorship process demanded from us the capacity to dream during the unexpected. We embraced the challenge to become acquainted with our disagreements and transformed them into creative fictions, we planted stubbornness and insisted on the joy of making the impossible happen and refused to serve simple entertainment. We dismissed names, identity labels and grasped the energy of transformation. Our research was the basis of what we present in the exhibit, but we need to emphasize the importance of the curatorship process shaped and refined in each new encounter with the artists. This was how we found the image of a forest that navigates through time, built by dark skin people.

The gathering of artists invites us to visit and try out ways to overstep the world from black, indigenous and LGBTQIAPN+ perspectives, engaged to freeing the imagery and to the celebratory state.

The world’s refusal in accepting us as humans is less of a problem to be solved and more of a possibility to be in relation to the many and ancient ways through which we exist: aquilombadas and committed to spreading life despite the violence. Out of these many overstepping ways, we can find fantastical narratives unfolding, abstract returns to a corporeality, monumental contestations, memory overlapping and ancestral future fabulations.

We notice the buzz from images rising in happiness after winning battles and making us capable of hearing the promises being whispered softly, this is just the half-beginning of a path. We had a goal: to navigate the spiral of time and set ourselves, here and now, an already existent world to come. The path we traced made us incorporate some old remains and refuse what was expected from nonconformists’ artists and their communities. We have drawn other paths in the map of Brazilian visual arts. Art only happens because it’s lived while we liberate our imaginations from the colonial project and become untamable.

Here are the images: abundant and bewitched. We want them to spread and live in musics, imaginations, dreams, schoolwork, night talks. Because they are the trace and the evidence that life keeps happening because it is enchanted.

Nothing… nothing exists beyond the miracle and endurance.

AFRONTART

The contemporary poetics created by Brazilian visual arts gender non-conforming bodies rise from the experience of pain that gathered thousands of body-cultures in survival and re-existence. Their imaginary celebrates the diversity in black and indigenous queer communities that emerge from their bodies, territorialities, affections and symbols.

If yesterday quilombo meant ancient escape technology, it became today an Afrofuturist technology of recognition, co-creation and strategy. If aldeia is an ancient-native expression meaning community, it teaches us today about future.

The curatorship process of this exhibit unleashes expanded imaginations towards a decolonial symbolic ecology on culture. It presents the creative, aesthetic, technical and poetical diversity of different artists with distinct ages, and traces what is inescapable in the multiple identities and expressions in Brazilian art.
